As I approach my mid-thirties my skin care regime has dramatically changed from when I was in my twenties. Pesky blemishes are no longer my main focus and instead I obsess over those fine lines appearing on my forehead, even skin tone and tired, dehydrated eyes. Of course I have tried and tested hundreds of products and somehow have settled on these few (or maybe a more than a few)…for now 🙂
I like the products I use for many different reasons. Some because I believe they work. Some I just want to believe they work. My favorites include creams and lotions just smell divine or are so silky that I just have to slather it all over my face and hope that the magical claims will hold true.
For whatever reason you chose your favorite products, if they make you feel like a beauty queen then you’ve chosen the right products!
First of all, I want to stress the importance of washing your face every night before bed! The exposure to the outside world is hosting a bacteria party on your face and you need to clean that off!
Secondly, always include a sunscreen in your daily regime. Trust me…you will thank me one day for this.
My skin type….
I have normal to oily skin. Fine lines on my forehead. Those ever so apparent “elevens”. Post blemish/Sun pigmentation. Genetic dark circles, with under eye wrinkles and of course, the odd blemish that decides to poke through. Those, to list a few, are my main concerns.
My Morning Routine + Tips!
Since I wash my face every night before bed, I don’t find it necessary to use a strong cleanser in the morning….no matter how oily my face is in the morning. Believe it or not, oily skin types are far less likely to wrinkle than dry skin types. So avoid over drying whenever possible. This Natural face cleanser is perfect for a morning pick me up. It is soft, gentle and I love it!
I always use a toner after cleansing. Not only does it re-balance the PH in your skin, it will remove any excess dirt, oil, makeup that cleansing may have missed. I wouldn’t be too picky on what toner you use. Just make sure you use the right one for your skin type. If you are going to splurge, don’t splurge on your toner….splurge on your serum!
Serums are AWESOME! If you haven’t jumped on this band wagon yet, hop on! Serums are full of antioxidants and other powerful ingredients dependent on what you are looking for in a serum. Serums have the ability to penetrate deep into the layers of your skin and thus, helping promote healthy skin from below the surface. Most moisturizers will only penetrate the top layer of skin (Epidermis). Serums also help draw your moisturizer further into your skin to achieve better results.
I honestly don’t think that it is necessary to use an eye serum. If I didn’t like testing so many products, or if I was on a tighter budget, I would simply use my facial serum on my eyes. However, my eyes are what I work the hardest at protecting and fixing so I do whatever I think will help in this department! The Clinique Eye serum is a roll on applicator. This type of application helps to improve circulation. High concentration of Caffeine in this product helps to reduce dark circles and puffiness. Worth a shot!
I truly believe in this eye cream. I find it wakens and brightens my eyes as well as provides ample hydration. This will be a staple in regime for a long time.
I am currently using this moisturizer because I felt my skin needed some help in the “even tone” department. I love the way it feels on my skin and my makeup glides beautifully over top. I can’t say that I have noticed much of a change in my skin tone, although a few friends have mentioned it so it must be doing something. This moisturizer does not contain SPF so I will be changing it up soon as the sun starts to appear here in Vancouver.
This Moisturizer is for all skin types. For someone with oily skin this sends off a red flag but I found that it does not make my skin more oily than normal during the day.
CC Cream ~ Smashbox Camera Ready CC Cream Dark Spot Correcting
This particular CC cream is dark spot correcting as well it has an SPF of 30. Bonus! This is by far the best CC/BB Cream I have used for my skin type. It does not leave your skin at all oily! The best way to apply this cream is right after your moisturizer. It is much easier to apply and you won’t need to use half as much. This cream provides terrific light coverage. I do not use foundation, and as you know, I have an uneven skin tone and this cream smooths all of that out with a natural look. I don’t think I will ever stop using this cream.
My Nightly Routine + Tips!
This is where all the fun happens! Your night time regime can include much more as you’re not as concerned with makeup application, too oily of skin etc. You want to create a power house regime that will keep your skin hydrated (even if you have oily skin as oily skin doesn’t mean hydrated skin), full of antioxidants and ingredients that target the areas of need.
Choose a cleanser for your skin type. Do not use anything too harsh as you don’t want to strip your face of all its natural goodness. However, do choose a cleanser that will actually do its job. Double cleanse if you wear makeup. Think of it this way…Cleanse once to remove your makeup, and once to cleanse your face. Let’s face it (No pun intended)…cleanser is on your face for less than a minute, so again, if you need to scrimp on something, here’s your chance. There is no need to spend a ton of money on anti-aging or whatever it is you’re looking for when it comes to a cleanser. The ingredients that are in there that hike up the price literally just get washed down the drain. Do not use cleansers with exfoliating beads/scrubs in them on a regular basis. This is far too much exfoliating and will cause more harm than good.
Toner ~ Clinique Clarifying Lotion
I use the same toner at night as in the morning.
Serum ~ Darphin VitalSkin Anti-Fatigue Serum
Antioxidant powerhouse Serum! Can’t go wrong here. I put this serum on my eyes as well as I’m not too concerned with puffiness at night so there is no need to use the daily eye serum.
Facial Oil ~ Ole Henrikson Pure Truth Youth Activating Oil
Facial oil is something I find that takes a little getting used to. People tend to scare away when they think of lathering oil over their face especially if you have oily skin. Let me tell you…Oil is your friend! It’s not like rubbing sebum (naturally produced oil) all over your face, it is like rubbing pure gold on your face. Once you get over the fear you will learn to love it too! It does not make oily skin more oily, in fact it will help slow down the production of sebum as your face won’t find the need to produce as much since it’s getting it from another source…the facial oil! Try it, you won’t be disappointed.
This particular facial oil is my favorite. 100% percent rose hip. Go ahead, do some research, pure gold I’m telling you. Jam packed with Vitamins C and A along with omega 3s 6s and 9s. Love. Love. Love.
Once I am finished applying to my face, I take what’s left on my finger and gentle tap it under my eyes as it has a brightening property to it.
I apply 100% pure almond oil all around my eyes. It is extremely hydrating and helps diminish the appearance of dark circles. *I will be writing a post on dark circles soon and will edit this with a link at that time. Stay Tuned!
If I have time, I will let the serum and the oil soak in for a bit before I apply my moisturizer. I’m not sure why, but I do. Maybe it helps with absorption, maybe not, but it makes me feel good to do so and that’s what counts!
Applying an emollient (moisturizer that help keep the skin dry by reducing water loss from the epidermis) is very important to keep your eyes hydrated. This particular eye cream claims to diminish dark circles like nothing else! Not sure if it helps or not since I use so many products I can’t really tell what is actually working and what is not, but for now, this is what I’m using. I will probably try some else once the bottle is empty because trying something new is fun and shopping around for that new product is fun too!
Moisturizer ~ Kate Somerville RetAsphere 2-in-1 Retinol Night Cream
If you take anything away from this post please take this…Retinol (A potent derivative of vitamin A) is the single most proven effective for preventing and dimishing wrinkles. It builds up collagen in your skin so if you can tolerate it, you need to use it! Retinol is not for everyone, but using a product with a strong concentration of vitamin A will do the trick as well. Retinol does not like the sun, so I suggest only using it at night. You may need to build up a tolerance for it, so please start with a couple days a week and slowly work your way to 5 days a week. I suggest using a highly moisturizing cream on those two extra nights of the week. *I will post my favorites in next weeks post.
