I had to laugh when I saw this product. A Selfie Powder? Come on! I suppose it must market well to those avid Selfie takers but could these Powders really take the place of photo filter?
The answer is simple. Of course not! The Too Faced Selfie Powders are in fact very luxurious feeling to the touch. Finely milled and incredibly soft. Which is more than I can say for other Too Faced products. I find their products to be more on the gimmicky side rather than focusing on creating a great product. Regardless, it seems to be working as they are on of the top cosmetic companies out there.
Of course I understand that these powder are simply ‘light reflecting’ powders and I have read other bloggers compare them to the Hourglass Ambient lighting palette. My view is a bit different. The ambient palette is beautifully designed, formulated and markets itself to ‘diffuse, and soften the way light reflects on skin.’ Where the Too Faced Product markets itself as ‘a palette with three lightweight, finishing face powders that mimic the effects of photo filters to brighten, bronze, and illuminate the skin.’
See the difference for yourself…The Hourglass Ambient Palette is a neutral palette that can be used to bronze, highlight and illuminate for a natural look. Gorgeous!
You can see in the swatches below that Too Faced Selfie Powders are very light in pigment focusing on the illuminating properties, however, it is still clear that these powders have a definite color to them when applied to the skin. I don’t know about you but you won’t see me walking around with a blue face looking like a smurf just so I can use the Hashtag #NoFilter! And trust me when I tell you that applying these powders certainly does not take the place of a photo filter! Not even close.
Needless to say, I purchased the Too Faced Selfie Powder Palette as I had to see with my own eyes what it is capable of and as I suspected it is a total gimmick and not cheap at $45.00 CAD at Sephora! So back it went. Save your pennies ladies and if you are in the market for a lighting palette, try out the Hourglass Ambient Palette. It costs a bit more at $67.00 CAD but worth the investment.
I saw this in Sephora the other day and just like you it did look funny to me. I don’t own any Too Faced products because I always believed that their products are so hyped and overrated, especially those melted liquid lipsticks. Those lipsticks don’t even last half an hour, don’t even have an average pigment, and appear more glossy than a lipstick product. I’m so glad you made a post on these selfie powders. Saved me my money. Phew.

I thought this palette was ridiculous as soon as it came out. I could maybe see the yellow and orange powders working with a contour, but purple? Aren’t we trying to avoid purple at all costs?! An enjoyable post none the least 🙂

Thanks for sharing! This was a great, honest post. They really know how to get IG users. It’s strange to have a super yellow and super blue powder!

Yes it’s super weird! And big surprise no other companies have jumped on that band wagon…for good reason of course 🙂

I wanted to love this product because the idea of it amused me (selfie powders? come on, that’s awesome), but it just seems poorly executed and definitely not a substitute for the Ambient Lighting Palette.

Great honest review! I was wondering about these powders though they really don’t appeal to me. I wouldn’t buy them lol. What’s wrong with looking like your natural self anyway? 🙂

When I saw the product shot when it came out I definitely wasn’t impressed. But I am more interested in the hourglass palette now. Thanks for the post! I love when people do honest reviews. People can’t like everything and if you didn’t like a product its good to know why! Xx

You are welcome. And of course honesty…what good is a review if it’s BS right?

exactly! Well it’s just some people only do positive reviews and never have anything negative to say.

This product amuses me! A selfie powder! Just when you thought you’ve seen it all!
I would totally have bought it just coz it’s such a ridiculous thing that I would have to try it out, so now I know to steer clear! Thank you 🙂

Seriously, don’t. I honestly can’t think of anything good to say about these powders except that I suppose you could use the brown color as a bronzer

I had a feeling it was too good to be true…
I would have bought this pallet on the “Moon River” powder name alone, but I’m glad I didn’t. Thanks for sharing! 🙂

Psst! The Ambient Palette is actually C$67. They fool you with the $41 brush right under it, LOL! Too bad about the TF palette; at least you could return it. I think the Hourglass looks a lot better, even with the higher price.

Thank for that! I will update that right away. Darn brushes….lol
And yes, I would still spend more money to get a product that will actually do something for my face 🙂

I love how in America you can return cosmetics that turn out to be awful. That would never happen here, and it really puts me off spending much on products as I’ve been totally burnt before! Great review – it seems a bit… sad? to me that people are now focusing on how they’ll look in photos more than actually enjoying the event!
